The Surprising Mental, Physical, and Social Benefits of Joining a Vocal Group

Article by Rufus Massey, AVP Past President.

Some men spend their free time on golf courses, tennis courts, hiking trails, or in workshops and garages. Those are all great pursuits. But many men are missing something they didn’t even know they needed: a place to raise their voice and sing with others.

For many of us, singing slowly disappeared somewhere along the way. We sang in church, school, or maybe in the car with the radio turned up. Then life got busy. Careers happened. Families happened. Years passed.

What many people don’t realize is that singing is much more than entertainment.

Science and experience continue to point toward a simple truth: singing can be good for the mind, body, and spirit.

Singing is exercise for your brain

Learning music stretches the brain in unique ways. Following a melody, listening to harmonies, memorizing lyrics, and blending with others creates a workout that engages concentration and memory.

Many singers describe rehearsals as mentally refreshing. Instead of thinking about deadlines, bills, or the endless to-do list, your mind becomes fully focused on one thing: creating music together.

That kind of attention can feel surprisingly energizing.

Singing reduces stress and lifts mood

Have you ever noticed how you feel after singing along to a favorite song?

You’re not imagining it.

Many people report that singing helps them feel calmer and more connected. Deep breathing, emotional expression, and shared experiences can change the way you feel in the moment.

After a difficult day, ninety minutes of singing with a group can feel like hitting a reset button.

Men need friendships too

This may be one of the most overlooked issues today.

Many men build friendships through work or through their children’s activities, but over time those connections can fade. Creating new friendships as adults often takes intentional effort.

A singing group creates something different.

You are not just standing beside people. You’re working together toward a shared goal. You’re laughing through rehearsals, learning together, improving together, and creating memories together.

Many men come for the music and stay for the relationships.

“But I don’t think I’m a singer.”

That thought keeps many potential singers away.

The reality is that most people are not trying out for Broadway. They simply enjoy music and want to experience it with others.

You do not have to be a professional musician to experience the benefits of singing. You do not need perfect pitch. You do not need years of training.

You only need a willingness to show up and give it a try.

Why I sing with Atlanta Vocal Project

At the Atlanta Vocal Project, we are pursuing musical excellence, but we’re also building something larger than music.

We are creating community.

We come together to learn, improve, laugh, perform, and encourage one another. We challenge ourselves musically while building friendships that extend beyond rehearsals.

Some members arrive because they love harmony. Others arrive because they want a new challenge or a place to connect.

Many discover they found much more than they expected.

Maybe it’s time to sing again

If singing used to be part of your life, perhaps this is the season to rediscover it.

And if you’ve never sung with a group before, maybe this is the perfect time to start.

You may come for the music.

You may stay for the friendships.

You may discover benefits you never expected.
