Why Atlanta Vocal Project Is the Best Men's Chorus in Atlanta
Look, we get it. It's a pretty bold claim, but here are 5 reasons why we think Atlanta Vocal Project can be considered the best chorus in Atlanta for men who love to sing.
1. International Caliber and Proven Excellence
Atlanta Vocal Project formed in 2005 with the goal of being a top tier men's chorus not only in metro Atlanta, but across the country. In our broader organization, annual chorus contests are the main way to validate that level of musical skill. Since then, AVP has won our district chorus contest 7 times (every time we've competed) and qualified to compete at the top International contest 15 times, including 5 combined with our partners the Tampa Heralds of Harmony. Most of those International contests saw us finish in the top 10, culminating in our last contest in 2024 when we finished as the 2nd place barbershop chorus in the world. We're going back this year to try to win the top spot! We've had multiple chapter quartets win the district quartet contest over the years, one as recently as our last contest in fall 2025.
We work hard each week to achieve that level of success, but that is what this group was built on. Each member is dedicated to maximizing their artistic potential so we can deliver the highest quality performance for every single audience that hears us. AVP isn’t just a local community group; it is a world-class competitor that represents Georgia globally.

2. Precision and Artistry
For its entire history, AVP has been under the leadership of musical director Clay Hine. His reputation for world-class arrangements and coaching ensures the chorus maintains a professional standard of vocal production and musical storytelling. For many decades, Clay has been one of the most sought-after arrangers for capturing the perfect balance of powerful modern expression with classic barbershop style. We benefit both from singing a repertoire that draws mostly from his brilliant mind and from receiving his weekly experienced guidance.
When you see our chorus perform, that all shines through on full display in our polished and emotional delivery.
3. Deep Roots in the Community and Beyond
In May 2026, we headlined a wonderful show at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center celebrating America's 250th anniversary. This was just the latest of a long partnership with the City of Roswell, performing for many of their community events both public and private, to entertain local residents. We support a number of other local communities as well, including Atlanta itself, where we've sung the National Anthem for the Braves, performed at dozens of US Naturalization Ceremonies, and brought musical cheer to schools all across the metro area. Our members are more than just entertainers; they are stewards of a uniquely American art form.
While we love being a part of our local communities, we have also served as global ambassadors. Our International contests regularly bring us to cities across the US and Canada. And two years ago, AVP was honored to travel to Normandy and Paris, France, where we performed for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Very few community arts organizations are selected for such high-profile international commemorations, proving that AVP’s impact extends far beyond the Perimeter.
4. Direct Audience Connection
Close your eyes and picture a traditional choir (well, open them back up to keep reading). You're almost certainly including a black music folder in that image, blocking your view of the whole performer, and maybe even an orchestra or piano. Atlanta Vocal Project, like most barbershop choruses, memorizes 100% of our music and sings completely without accompaniment. Why do we take so much prep time and effort when we could just hold music and sing along to a backing instrument instead? Because we believe removing those barriers between the musician and the audience creates much more opportunity for meaningful connection. Musical expression is best achieved when a singer can look at the person to whom they're expressing it rather than a piece of paper. It is at its purest form when the only sounds reaching the ear is the human voice, complete with its complex storytelling ability.
Come to one of our shows, and you'll immediately feel the difference. We want to involve the audience as much as possible, so you'll see dynamic facial expression, powerful body movement, and even choreographed dance at times, all designed to immerse you fully into the message of the song. Our intimate performance style also allows a high versatility in venue accommodation and even musical genres. From a four-man quartet, to a small group, to a full 50-singer chorus, we can fit any occasion or event. Although barbershop harmony is our primary style, we sing a wide range of music from different periods to keep things interesting. And of course our trademark humor is always popping in to bring the laughs.
5. A Culture of Brotherhood
Everything we do always keeps the external audience in mind, but ultimately it all starts internally amongst ourselves. AVP is a unique environment for our area where men both young and old can come together every week in fellowship with a common passion for music. The last few years we have been one of the fastest growing choruses in the state, and for good reason. There are very few outlets left in our culture today that offer the chance for men of different generations and different backgrounds to learn from and bond with one another outside the stress of everyday life.
Through the BHS Code of Ethics and our own desire for personal harmony, we ensure everyone who sings with AVP feels important and welcome, whether they drive from Sandy Springs, Midtown, Doraville, Marietta, Forest Park, or anywhere across this great state. As our director penned so eloquently during a Covid lockdown arrangement, which we now sing at the end of every chapter meeting, "It's the music that brings us together, but it's the friendships that make us stay."
